We are excited to begin a new semester of teaching in our Equipping Hour here at Grace Bible Church. This semester, Job Dalomba will be teaching sessions on church history, beginning in 6 B.C. with the birth of Jesus Christ. We will examine the background and historical context of the four gospels, the Acts of the Apostles, the time of the New Testament epistles, and the subsequent history that followed the early church. The semester will draw to an end as we arrive at the daw of the Protestant Reformation.
The goal of this course is to help us understand better the faith and history that we have inherited, and how we came to where we are now in history. We will also better understand how Christians have historically lived in hostile times, how the gospel has grown over the last two centuries, how our doctrines, traditions and structures were formed, and how they have changed over time.
The time will be free to allow for teaching, questions and discussions. It will not be a mere recounting of facts. We want to tell stories, take asides and see how these events explain other things that came later, stop to put a spotlight on certain documents, Christian leaders and events, and examine the factors involved in history that God has used to bring things about.
While in this time, all will be stretched and will be pleasantly surprised how they will be changed as a result of knowing our history better. We will likely have figures, groups, traditions and practices that we appreciate more, and some we see in a new light that we hadn’t seen before.
